Bread... yummmmmm!

~~Arab Flat Bread~~

Directly across the street or parking area from our hotel is a strip of other hotels with businesses in the bottom. These are classical Abu Dhabi. So I went over there to a little "grocery" store. Most expats do not go into these little places. Probably because they are basically a hole in the wall, literally, and not frequented by women. But because I am trying to experience all that I can, I go :-) So I went in and the store is about a 7 foot square place and basically one squishy aisle absolutely packed with canned and packaged goods and a small cooler for soft drinks. So I bought a Pepsi as they don't have Dr. Pepper anywhere in the UAE~~ I think I need to advocate for that to change... lol! But the place that was VERY interesting was the little "bakery" right there too. The picture is the bread that I bought for 1 durham, which is about a quarter. It is the size of a medium pizza. This is an unleavened bread that he flattens out on a rounded stone and then puts this directly into a "hole" which is the open oven for about 1 minute. It comes out and is yummmyyyyy! I thought it would be amazing as a pizza or like with honey/butter or sugar/cinnamon/butter~~ like an elephant ear that you might buy at the Portland Farmers Market. I bought two and paid him 5 durham. He was surprised and VERY happy! It didn't hurt that I said "thank you" in Arabic! I don't know how they survive on this income as he might sell 100 in one day (maybe more) and at 1 durham per that is not a ton of money. So I try to give a little more. In fact, I am going to be doing this a few times a week and most likely will give the bread to our housekeepers or have people over to eat it all~~ otherwise I might start looking like a GIANT roll! hahahahaha! So that is the tale of the bread saga. Thanks for joining me on my adventure.
