Diabetes

With opportunities gallore for volunteering here in Abu and since my family has been deeply affected by the life of a Diabetic, I contacted the Diabetes Foundation and will be doing lots of worthwhile things for them. They have a beautiful, state of the art facility that serves more than 20,000 patients here in the UAE. In November, they hosted a walk-a-thon to promote the Sheikhs pronouncement to his people that they should be more health conscious and more actively engaged in exercise. There were over 16,000 that participated!! Wow! The Arabian food is traditionally VERY fatty and rich so many of them are quite obese. I read in the paper that the percentage of students who are over weight is close to 65%. Purely because of their rich diets of arabian foods but also their love of fast food. Not that this is the only contributing factor to diabetes but it's something that can be promoted to this very young society of people. I'm impressed with all of the ways Abu Dhabi spends their vast amount of oil monies to help their people. So, I'm encouraging others to get involved in a volunteer opportunity of choice. My sister has been involved with a cancer group, The Candlelighters, for many years. You never know what kind of an impact you can have by just giving a few hours of your free time to a worthy cause. Me, I'm going to help those who are struggling with Diabetes and just maybe in my lifetime they will figure out a way to eradicate it's devastating effects.
Enjoy your life, your week, your moment~ life is too short to live with those shoulda, coulda, woulda's :-)
